How To Sell On ETSY - Introduction

Now Playing -  Girl Is On My Mind by The Black Keys

For the last few years my wife and I have been selling our handmade décor and geeky stuff on Etsy, an online marketplace. What is the first thing people ask us when they find out that’s what we do for a living? Not “What’s the shop?” or “Ooh, what do you sell?” No, it’s almost invariably something like “I make things too… I should do that. How do I do that?” (Though sometimes it’s the variation – “I make things and would like you to sell them for me.”)

Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t offended by these questions, not at all. We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to make a living (mostly) from our arts and we want to do everything we can to help every person we know do the same. The only problem is the misconception about running your own business selling things you create yourself – it is INCREDIBLY TIME CONSUMING. Many people, when they hear you work from home for yourself assume you spend half the day surfing the net and the other half napping. In reality, the two of us spend well over 70-80 hours a week working on some aspect of our business and there’s constantly some little detail or project that is waiting impatiently for us to get to it. My average day starts with making a to-do list that usually runs to about 20-30 items, ranging from “Email about shipment” – a two minute job, to “Individually hand paint and heat treat the words Lumos and Nox on 150 switchplates” A job that can take 9 hours of constant work.

So in lieu of trying to help everyone that asks and not actually having the time to be much help, we decided a quick series of How-To blogs would be a great way to guide people down the path of creating their own online self-employed empire.

The plan is to post 4 blogs, each outlining a specific aspect of selling on Etsy and other online sources. However, I tend to babble and that may expand to a number of additional sub-blogs.

So if you don’t have the patience to read all of them and want to know the five most important things about selling on Etsy, here they are –

CREATE SOMETHING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT
If you plan to make a living off of these products, you will end up making a ridiculous number of them and talking a lot about them with people. If you don’t like what you make or are just doing it because it will sell, not only will it become apparent that you aren’t passionate about it, but it won’t actually be any fun to do.

CREATING IS A VERY SMALL PORTION OF RUNNING AN ONLINE SHOP
Like, depressingly small. Most of your time will be spent writing, taking care of customers, dealing with problems, shipping things, taking photos and research.

80% OF A SUCCESSFUL ONLINE SHOP OWNER’S TIME WILL BE SPENT RESEARCHING
This is not an exaggeration at all, especially in the beginning. You will have to research everything – how to run the site, how to word the listing, what tags to use, what tags are, what others are selling, what they are selling for, etc, etc, etc. The second you get tired of researching and adapting, you stop being successful. The people that have asked for help from us immediately get a list of about a hundred things to go and research.

RESEARCH EVERYTHING
I’m not kidding here.

DO NOT ANTICIPATE SUCCESS.
It’s a waste of your time and will only lead to disappointment. There are currently over six hundred and forty thousand active shops on Etsy – that’s shops with items currently available for sale. There are more than a million registered shops and more than twenty five million items available for sale on Etsy right now. Even if you spend the time required to research every aspect of your shop, have a unique and innovative product and spend all the time you can to create an ideal shop and business, you may still never sell anything. It’s as simple as that. It took us two years and hundreds of items before we started building a following and found the right items for us. Some will find that faster, others never will. This is another reason why you need to make something you are passionate about. At least you will love what you make.

Good Luck.

Freedom!

Life -

 Ahhh.... Life!

When last we left the ROUS Motel, it was November in 2012. Now, in January of the big 2013, Our life is totally different. Both Lindsay and I have quit our Corporate, long term, stable jobs and we are working full bore, full time on Deeply Dapper and our writing!

Which is insane, frankly. I had been with Walgreens for just under ten years when I put in my notice. January first was my last day. It's been almost a week and it still hasn't really sunk in. I still feel like I'm on an extended stretch of days off. Once it does, it is possible I may freak out. Going from a steady, decent paying job to one entirely dependent on people on the internet liking your stuff and finding it in the first place is like jumping off of a cliff. On the bright side it's also a leap away from a soul sucking, anti-family monster and into the arms of a loving muse that wants you to be creative and happy.

More when I have stabilized a bit, but stay tuned, this blog will track our every success and failure as we strike off into the great unknown. If we can get out of the driveway. Lots of snow out here.

I've got a bad motivator!

I was planning to wait and update my blog on Thursday, when I have a day off, especially after I hurt my finger at work - A box went rogue and sliced my right index finger under the nail about a half inch deep. Which is indeed just a papercut when you think about it, but an awesomely painful one, especially when you're a henpeck typist, like I am.

But then two things happened!
Ball... Not pictured, a second ball, further back in there...

First, I took the three awesome photos of the boys, hanging out, being goofy that accompany this post. As you can see, they're deserving of it.

Ludo, laying in what looks to be a horribly uncomfortable position. Also observe his luxurious mane.
And second of all, I got a blog award! Zoe, over at No Letters On My Keyboard chose me as one of the recipients of the "One Lovely Blog Award" Keep in mind, she's a horror writer with awesome taste, who just gave me an award titled One Lovely Blog. A recent post was about how death and darkness makes her a better person. The blog award also features pink roses and a lacy teacup. SO clearly, Miss Zoe has a great sense of humor. So in honor of a Major Award, I figured I should Lovely Up my blog with some pictures of the kids looking stupid. Taa-Dah!

Thanks, Zoe! (And Thursday or so, I'll pass on the love to some deserving blogs too!)

I also have a few book reviews to catch up on, I posted a sneak preview of Martin, my newest creature on Deeply Dapper, and I started setting Halloween at work. Hooray for Halloween!!!

Uhh... Nothing to see here, move along! I hurt my finger! Arrrh!

Lost In Time And Space

Life -

Believe it or not, but tomorrow seems to have slid a few days to the right on the calendar. Hard to believe, eh? I've been busy and more to the point, a bit overwhelmed! In the last few weeks, I've worked an average of  60 hours a week at work, plus an hour commute time every day. Then, when I get home, I've dove headlong into my attempts to open a shop on the website Etsy, selling some sculptures, drawings and stickers I've made. And thats the tip of the iceberg, with a summer cold weighing me down the entire time. Every once in a while, I just want to call it a night and sleep for three days.

Anyway, things are progressing. Right now, I'm on the fence about my upcoming classes for my Pharmacy Tech License, something required by my work for my position. I'll take it eventually, but it involves three thorough and weighty tomes, 6 weekly three hour classes and a refresher, and I'm not sure if I'm up to that now with everything else. They have another class in January. Maybe it would be easier for me to concentrate on it after Christmas has spread it's joy around and things are calmer at work.  But I need to decide fast, as the first class is tomorrow morning!

My Etsy shop, Deeply Dapper is up and running now, with a few items on it, catering to the lover of the unknown, steampunk, Lovecraft and anything cool and mysterious, it will eventually include handmade Tie Tacks, Pocket Squares, Artwork, Photographic Prints, Auto Decals, Curiosities and more. Right now, all that's there are a couple Sasquatch stickers and a Beastie in a bottle, but check it out! I also started a blog for the shop to showcase works in progress and the like.

So to sum up, Life, as the heading proclaims, is crappy, busy and daunting right now. In fact, my brain is fuzzy enough that I started writing my Quarterly Reading Update today, without realizing that I still have the month of September.
